We are pleased to present this oil on canvas from the 17th-century Italian school. It is a magnificent religious painting depicting the biblical scene of the Annunciation—a central theme in Christian iconography—and a work rich in religious symbolism.

IIconography and Symbolism: Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary:

The Archangel Gabriel, on the left, is depicted with large wings shaded in tones of orange and pink. He wears a green robe and a golden mantle. With his left hand, he offers Mary a sprig of white lilies, a symbol of purity and chastity. With his raised right hand, he makes a gesture of greeting and blessing. The Virgin Mary, on the right, kneels at a wooden prayer desk upon which rests an open book (symbolizing the Holy Scriptures). She wears a red tunic and a blue mantle. Her posture is humble, with her head bowed and her hand placed on her chest in a gesture of acceptance. At the center of the composition, between Gabriel and Mary, a white dove (the Holy Spirit) hovers, radiating a brilliant golden light that serves as the luminous focal point of the entire work. Above, amidst the clouds of a golden sky, the figure of God the Father appears, blessing and watching over the scene. The scene unfolds against an indistinct dark brown background, yet the clouds and divine light highlight the central figures.

A painting remarkable for its pictorial quality and profound religious message. The work displays the characteristic features of Italian sacred art from the Baroque period, with strong contrasts of light and shadow and warm colors.

Condition:

If you love antique Italian sacred art, you simply must add this splendid painting to your collection. The work is presented in an antique black-lacquered wooden frame, featuring a classic gilded motif along the inner edge. Regarding its condition, the painting retains its original canvas and is generally well-preserved; however, a minor flaw should be noted in the upper section, near the figure of God the Father (see photos). Finally, while the accompanying frame is antique, it dates to the 19th century.
