We are pleased to present this oil on canvas from the 18th-century Italian school. A splendid religious painting depicting a classic Christian subject: the Madonna with Child Jesus and the Infant Saint John the Baptist. The Virgin Mary is positioned on the right, tenderly gazing at the two children. She wears a light red robe covered by a green and brown cloak. Her right hand is raised in a protective blessing. The Infant Jesus is seated in the center, on his mother’s lap, turning toward the Infant Saint John, tenderly holding him in his arms. The Infant Saint John is on the left, characterized by a darker complexion, embracing Jesus and returning his gaze. The composition is very classical and typical of this type of religious depiction.
The pictorial quality is good, with a good command of chiaroscuro between the background and the illuminated figures in the foreground. The brushstrokes are soft on the children’s faces and curly hair. The style strongly reflects the Baroque painting tradition of the Italian school.
