Siamo lieti di presentare questo splendido olio su tela del XIX secolo. Questo magnifico dipinto di grandi dimensioni reca firma in basso a destra: Watson W. e una data non del tutto leggibile, probabile 1896 (?). Firma riferibile al pittore William Watson Junior (1847–1921). La famiglia inglese Watson è composta da tre generazioni di artisti i cui soggetti erano principalmente bovini al pascolo. Influenzati da Rosa Bonheur, pittrice animalista e realista francese, e da Sir Edwin Landseer, pittore e scultore inglese noto per i suoi dipinti di animali. Questo dipinto è infatti una bellissima copia accademica ispirata al dipinto di Rosa Bonheur del 1860 “The Highland Raid”.

An extraordinary painting celebrating the majesty of a herd of cattle. At the center of the scene is a herd of typical Scottish Highland cattle, characterized by long horns and thick fur. The majestic bull with its pale golden coat advances to the right, while next to him stands a black bull facing forward, creating a strong color contrast. On the left, a flock of numerous sheep and goats with light, thick fleeces moves closely alongside the main herd. In the background, shepherds can be glimpsed with characteristic staffs to guide the animals. The surrounding landscape evokes Scottish moors and hills, beneath a partly cloudy blue sky on the right.

Animal painting was extremely popular in the 19th century. This painting reflects pure 19th-century realism, with meticulous attention to anatomical details and the texture of the animals’ fur and wool.
